EXCAVATION OF CONTAMINATED SOILS

Project: Former Bulk Fuel Storage Facility
Client: Confidential
Location: Santa Cruz, CA

Project Description:

Weber, Hayes and Associates conducted soil sampling to satisfy lending institution requirements for a large commercial development in Santa Cruz, California. The drilling program detected a significant petroleum hydrocarbon release originating from historical use of the property as a bulk fuel supplier (responsible party). Under strict construction deadlines, Weber, Hayes and Associates directed excavation of over 6,000 cubic yards of highly impacted soil which extended 5 feet below stabilized groundwater. The project included excavation dewatering, engineered compaction of backfill, and onsite bioremediation treatment of contaminated soil. The excavation was completed with regulatory approval and the site secured regulatory closure after one year of groundwater monitoring.
As a result of our initial assessment and remediation work, the property was developed on schedule and financial responsibility for the cleanup was contractually assigned to the former owner.

Tasks:

  • Development of cost-effective remedial strategies to remove the source of on-going groundwater contamination. This typically involves an integrated plan which includes excavation dewatering and removal of "hot spot" soils at the groundwater interface.
  • Coordination with regulatory agency personnel and submittal of all required permits.
  • Completion of all required Workplans, Site Safety Plans, and Air Board notification.
  • Soil and groundwater sampling, project documentation, and summary reporting.
  • On-site oversight by field geologist experienced with subsurface contaminant transport and having skills to effectively remove contamination in soils above and below groundwater.
