Project Description:
An underground storage tank (UST) leak caused gasoline contamination of soil and groundwater beneath an operating gasoline service station. After replacement of the leaking USTs, Weber, Hayes and Associates installed soil vapor extraction wells and combined soil vapor extraction/groundwater extraction wells to remove fuel hydrocarbons from the subsurface. Groundwater extraction lowers the water table exposing the "smear zone" to vapor extraction air flow which can clean the site more effectively than groundwater extraction. Extracted groundwater is treated in a shallow tray aerator, and then polished with carbon absorbers, and extracted air and aerator off-gas are treated by a catalytic oxidizer.
