SOURCE REMOVAL USING LARGE DIAMETER AUGERS

Project: Removal of Saturated and Unsaturated Zone Soil Contamination
Client: Former Transporation Fueling Facility
Location: Hayward, CA

Project Description:

In the removal of saturated and unsaturated zone petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil, Weber, Hayes and Associates used six-foot diameter augers. Sixteen, six foot diameter shafts were dug to 40 feet below ground surface, 10 feet below groundwater. Approximately 600 cubic yards of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soils were removed, loaded directly onto trucks, and hauled to a Class II landfill. In conjunction with the removal of contaminated soils, 3,000 gallons of contaminated water was pumped from one of the large diameter auger shafts to help de-water the site during drilling operations, as well as to remove contaminated groundwater from the site. Water was properly disposed of off site. The large diameter shafts were back-filled with control density fill in the water bearing zone, then with compacted fill, and finally with uncontaminated native soils near the ground surface.
