REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE

Mr. Hayes has the primary responsibility for planning and directing hydrogeology studies for Weber, Hayes & Associates. He has spent the last seventeen years working on a variety of groundwater investigations, including regional groundwater supply studies, groundwater monitoring plans, site remediation testing and design, environmental site assessments, monitoring well installations, and conducting pumping tests.

SELECTED PROJECTS

Conducted 20-day aquifer pumping test on riverside production well in Santa Cruz County, to evaluate water supply potential, aquifer/surface water interaction, and water quality.

Reviewed aquifer pumping tests and potential for pumping impact on the Gualala River, a noted northern California Steelhead river, for proposed increase in water production.

Direct hydrogeology evaluation of Graniterock's Wilder Sand Quarry, Santa Cruz County, CA for mining permit . Study included assessment of seawater intrusion potential, and potential impact of mining on groundwater recharge and groundwater extraction.

Conducted Recharge Basin Design testing, with field measurements of sustained recharge rates at multiple proposed recharge basin locations in the Pajaro Valley.

Evaluated classification of well water for State Water Board water rights classification (Percolated Groundwater versus Underflow) for vineyard water supply, Sonoma County.

Prepared evaluation of the potential groundwater resources on the University of Santa Cruz (UCSC) campus, for UC Regents (1989).

Directed drilling and completion of groundwater production and groundwater monitoring wells on the UCSC campus, for UC Regents.

Conducted a regional study of groundwater supply potential for the North Coast area, Santa Cruz County, including recommendations for production well locations, for the City of Santa Cruz Water Department.

Conducted site characterization, vapor extraction testing and analysis, and vapor extraction system installation for multiple gasoline contamination sites in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties.

Directed large scale soil and groundwater remediation project for a diesel spill, including excavation of 6000 cubic yards of soil and delineation of the groundwater contamination plume with monitoring wells. Directed land-farming bioremediation of the diesel contaminated soil.

Conducted Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessment for the closure of an industrial plant in Watsonville, CA, including research on chemical storage and adjacent land use, and completion of soil borings and monitoring wells for thorough site characterization. Distribution of organic solvents was documented by sampling from shallow and deep aquifers.

Conducted a drilling and detailed sampling program to determine the extent of high permeability gravel beds in Hollister, CA, for Recharge Basin system design, San Benito County Water District.

Conducted emergency response mapping of seismic ground cracking and landsliding in the Santa Cruz Mountains following the October 17, 1989 earthquake, for FEMA and Santa Cruz County officials.

Directed post-earthquake mapping and excavation of coastal landsliding at Seacliff State Beach, Aptos, CA, and other State Parks properties, for the California Department of Parks and Recreation (1989).

Conducted detailed aquifer pumping test investigation in a multi-level aquifer system at a Santa Clara industrial site. Analyzed results for aquifer characteristics, existence of aquifer boundaries, and interconnection between aquifers (1987).

Investigated the effect of bedrock faulting on permeabilities in a former Class 1 Hazardous Waste disposal area at a southern California landfill. Conducted an extensive air rotary drilling, sampling, and aquifer testing program combined with surface geologic mapping to identify permeability variations (1987).

Researched and prepared a comprehensive groundwater monitoring plan for the Ben Lomond Sanitary Landfill, Santa Cruz County. Supervised installation, sampling, and aquifer testing of groundwater monitoring well system for landfill (1987).

Supervised installation of groundwater monitoring wells and soil and groundwater sampling at several industrial and sanitary landfill sites in Santa Clara County (1986-88).

Prepared a detailed, three-dimensional computer model of a Monterey Bay area coastal basin to evaluate seawater intrusion. Simulated the impact of various water development scenarios (1985).

Planned and installed an unsaturated zone monitoring system beneath the clay liner of a proposed sanitary landfill, San Mateo County (1988).
